About PMC Physics A

This page includes information about the aims and scopes of PMC Physics A, editorial policies, open access and article-processing charges, the peer-review process and so on. For details of how to prepare and submit a manuscript through the online submission system, please see the instructions for authors.

Aims and scope

PMC Physics A is an international, peer-reviewed, open access journal that publishes articles on high-energy & nuclear physics, cosmology, gravity & astroparticle physics and also the instrumentation & data analysis of results in these areas.

The journal is edited by Professor Ken Peach, supported by an Editorial Board representing the subject areas within the journal's scope.

Copyright for research articles is retained by the author, who is free to distribute the article electronically or after printing, or to ask the publishers to do so. Discussion and debate concerning articles published in PMC Physics A is actively encouraged; readers have the facility to append comments to articles, and all such communications are moderated by the editors.

As an online journal, authors are encouraged to take advantage of all the possibilities available in this medium, including:

  • the opportunity to publish large datasets, large numbers of illustrations and moving pictures
  • the opportunity to publish extensive methods, references and discussions
  • display of tabular data in a form that can be read directly by other software packages (e.g. statistical programs)
  • creation of relevant links (e.g. to SPIRES, HEP-DATA, arXiv.org or other papers available on the web)

Complete research articles are published online. The citation for the article appears on the PDF and the full text of the complete article.

Open access

All articles published by PMC Physics A are made freely and permanently accessible online immediately upon publication, without subscription charges or registration barriers. Further information about our open access policy is available on the PhysMath Central Open Access Policy page.

Authors of articles published in PMC Physics A are the copyright holders of their articles and have granted to any third party, in advance and in perpetuity, the right to use, reproduce or disseminate the article, according to the PhysMath Central copyright and license agreement.

Article-processing charges

Open access publishing is not without costs. PMC Physics A therefore levies an article-processing charge of £750 (€1,100, US$1,320) for article accepted for publication. We routinely waive charges for authors from low-income countries. Generally, if the submitting author's institution is a BioMed Central member the cost of the article-processing charge is covered by the membership, and no further charge is payable. In the case of authors whose institutions are supporter members of BioMed Central, however, a discounted article-processing charge is payable by the author.

We offer a £30 discount for manuscripts formatted with EndNote 5 (or later versions) or Reference Manager 10. For further details, see our article-processing charge page.

Indexing services

Following publication in PMC Physics A, the full-text of each article is immediately and permanently archived in arXiv.org, the Cornell University full-text repository of preprints & science literature, and also in repositories at the University of Potsdam in Germany, at INIST in France and in e-Depot, the National Library of the Netherlands' digital archive of all electronic publications.

Submission and peer-review process

Peer review of research articles

Unless they are clearly below the standard required by the journal, submitted articles will be sent to peer reviewers. They will generally be reviewed by two experts with the aim of reaching a first decision as soon as possible. A third reviewer, generally one of the journal's advisers, will be used where necessary.

Where possible, the final decision is made on the basis that the peer reviewers are in accordance with one another, or that at least there is no strong dissenting view. In cases where there is strong disagreement either among peer reviewers or between the authors and peer reviewers, advice is sought from a member of the journal's Editorial Board.

Authors will be able to check the progress of their paper through the submission system at any time by logging into My manuscripts, a personalized section of the site.

Copyediting and proofs

Research articles published in PMC Physics A are published immediately on acceptance in the form of a provisional PDF. Copyedited and fully formatted PDF and full-text (HTML) versions are made available shortly after that.

Reprints

High-quality, bound reprints can be purchased for all articles published. Please see our reprints website for further information about ordering reprints, and to enquire about further details, including fees, please contact BioMed Central's reprint service.

Editorial policies

Any manuscript (or substantial parts of it) submitted to the journal must not be under consideration by any other journal although it may have been deposited on a preprint server. The manuscript should not have already been published in any journal or other citable form, with that exception that the editors are willing to consider manuscripts that are translations of articles originally published in another language. In this case, the consent of the journal in which the article was originally published must be obtained and the fact that the article has already been published must be made clear on submission and stated in the abstract. Authors are required to ensure that no material submitted as part of a manuscript infringes existing copyrights, or the rights of a third party.

Authors who publish articles in PMC Physics A retain copyright to their work; for further information, please see the "Copyright" section below.

Correspondence concerning articles published in PMC Physics A is encouraged. A "post a comment" feature is available on all articles published by PMC Physics A. Comments will be moderated by the editorial office (see our Comment policy for further information) and linked to the full-text version of the article, if suitable. Here is an example of an article with associated comments.

Editorial standards

PhysMath Central is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and endorses the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME) Policy Statement on Geopolitical Intrusion on Editorial Decisions.

Appeals against rejection

If authors are not satisfied with the decision made on their manuscript, they are welcome to contact the Editorial Office with their appeal; additional advice on the manuscript will be sought where appropriate. Authors who have appealed against a rejection but remain concerned about the editorial process can refer their case to COPE.

Competing interests

PMC Physics A requires authors to declare any competing financial or other interest in relation to their work. If any author has a competing interest, it should be declared in the covering letter upon manuscript submission.

Complete research articles are published online. The citation for the article appears on the PDF and the full text of the complete article.

Citing articles in PMC Physics A

Articles in PMC Physics A should be cited in the same way as articles in a traditional journal. Because articles are not printed, they do not have page numbers; instead, they are given a unique article number. Because the journals are online-only, they do not have issue numbers; each volume corresponds to a calendar year.

Article citations follow this format:
Authors: Title. PMC Phys A [year], [volume number]:[article number].
e.g. Lenahan C, Avigan D: Manuscript title in full. PMC Phys A 2008, 1:3

Why publish your article in PMC Physics A?

High visibility

PMC Physics A's open access policy allows maximum visibility of articles published in the journal as they are available to a wide, global audience. Articles that have been especially highly accessed are highlighted with a "Highly accessed" graphic, which appears on the journal's contents pages and search results.

Speed of publication

PMC Physics A offers a fast publication schedule whilst maintaining rigorous peer review; all articles must be submitted online, and peer review is managed fully electronically (articles are distributed in PDF form, which is automatically generated from the submitted files). Manuscripts are published with their final citation immediately upon acceptance in a provisional PDF form. The paper will subsequently be published in both fully browseable web form, and as a formatted PDF; the article will then be available through PMC Physics A, arXiv.org and, where appropriate, will be cross-listed on BioMed Central or Chemistry Central.

Flexibility

Online publication in PMC Physics A gives authors the opportunity to publish large datasets, large numbers of illustrations and moving pictures, to display data in a form that can be read directly by other software packages so as to allow readers to manipulate the data for themselves, and to create all relevant links (for example, to other databases and papers).

Promotion and press coverage

All articles published in PMC Physics A are included in article alerts and regular email updates.

Some may be included in abstract books mailed to academics and highlighted on PMC Physics A's pages and PhysMath Central's homepage.

In addition, articles published in PMC Physics A may be promoted by press releases to the general or scientific press. These activities increase the exposure and number of accesses for articles published in PMC Physics A.
